Ajay Devgan is on the roll !! The world knows about the number of consecutive releases he had or will be
having this year. First Bhoot, Qayamat and Chori Chori came in quick succession and now his fans will
have good enough look of him with Gangaajal, Zameen and Parwana coming one after another. Same
holds for Abhishek Bachchan who has at least 4 more movies lined up for the rest of 2003. Bipasha Basu
plays Abhishek's love interest in Zameen that carries the tagline - Love Courage Honor Country - and
suggests an army background. N.R.Pachisia (Ziddi, Tera Mera Saath Rahe) produces Zameen
while Rohit Shetty - son of veteran fight master Shetty - directs his debut venture. Himesh Reshammiya,
who has been successful so far with most of his compositions, gives music for the entire album and
Sameer writes.
Let's start with the talk of the town - 'Dilli Ki Sardi' (K.K. and Sweta Shetty) that has Amrita Arora in a
guest appearance sizzling like never before. Her outfits, gestures, body language and sheer sensuality
literally leave even elder sis Malaika Arora way behind !! Dunno whether people may even care if the audio
system goes off during the track is played in the movie as she is just all over the number !! Well, as in the
tradition of N.R. Pachisia movies (Kaale Kaale Baal...Ore Ore - Ziddi),
here too Sweta Shetty sings the traditional item dance number 'Dilli Ki Sardi' (that also features in it's
Remix version) and doesn't disappoint. Though the number may not become as big a hit as 'Ore Ore' as
this concept of a stage-based raunchy item song has been done to death, it should still be successful in
getting the regular 'First Day First Show' kind of audience in the theatres.
Wish one could get a chance to meet Mr. Sameer so that we could ask him that how a cup of coffee can
give 'KICK' if you are having it with your loved ones? Believe it or faint, but this is what he conveys through
the number "Tere Sang Ek Simple Si Coffee Bhi 'KICK' Deti Hai" !! Both KK and Hema Sardesai sing with
an attitude in their accent and try to sound a bit different in this track. Full marks to Himesh Reshammiya
that he makes use of one of his 'dhinchaak' acts in play and composes well for even such a track. Though
this may not be half as difficult for him when he composed 'Nikamma' or 'Mohabbat Hai Mirchi' !!
There are two love songs (we just can't stay without them even if it's a patriotic movie !!) in the movie -
'Mere Naal' and 'Bas Ek Baar'. Though none of the numbers may stay long even in the Top-20 charts, as
they are mainly gap fillers, they are at least not BAD !! 'Mere Naal' is sung by Shaan, Hema Sardesai and
J.G whereas 'Bas Ek Baar' has Alka Yagnik and Babul Supriyo rendering their vocals. Two average tracks!!
'Sarzameen Se' by K.K. and Shaan appears in both the song version and then as an instrumental, and as
the title suggests is a patriotic number. The different thing about the number is that instead of being purely
Indian in nature, the number is mainly poppish and has a mix of Hindi and English lyrics. The track seems
to be situated in an army camp and doesn't do much than just being another just OK song. Though the
intentions of the producer, director and the composer should be appreciated as they at least tried
something new, though with not much impact !!
In reality, movies like Zameen, that are hardcore action-masala movies do not rely too much on songs and
even if a number or two click then it is a major advantage. OK, so there has been Kaante that had hit
numbers despite being an action movie but then you can't always expect wonders to happen. Zameen has
a number or two that can pull in the crowds but that's it. You can's imagine everyone alike to be queuing
up in front of music stores to get a copy of Zameen !!
