  DVD Review
By Joginder Tuteja, January 29, 2008 - 15:00 IST

Jab We Met would go down as the 'sweetest' movie of 2007! Jab We Met is now en route to complete it's 100 days this coming weekend; quite an achievement considering the fact that majority of films today earn their maximum moolah in the opening weekend of their release!

DURATION
The film comes in a single as well as an exclusive twin DVD pack. While the film's duration is 138 minutes, the additional DVD in a twin pack also has 20 minutes of special features.

MOVIE DETAILS

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Producer: Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.
Music: Pritam
Lyrics: Irshaad Kamil

THE FILM
An underdog film, it has an interesting story behind its box office success. Releasing barely a fortnight before Om Shanti Om, it took a good start and held on extremely well in its second week also due to continued popularity. But then Om Shanti Om and Saawariya arrived like a hurricane on Diwali and forced Jab We Met out of multiplexes due to limited screen space availability.

However, it was audiences to announce halla bol and popular demand warranted that Jab We Met return with a bang a week later, albeit at the expense of Saawariya. Audiences were clearly the one calling the shots and the film went on to write a success story like never before. The film only went on to grow further on week after week and continued its winning run along with Om Shanti Om.

Pritam's music has been great assets too as it arrived with minimal hype but went on to consolidate a place in the charts for weeks to follow. Currently reigning from the top, the music of Jab We Methasn't quite been challenged by newer albums.

Career best performances of Shahid and Kareena, one of the best scores of Pritam, genuinely heart warming scenes, a story which went beyond the basics of boy-meet-girl situation, a superb follow through from Imtiaz after Socha Na Tha and above all audiences showering their love on the film have made Jab We Met yet another underdog success for Shahid after Vivah.

PACKAGING

Jab We Met comes in a basic plastic case sans any frills, as is the hallmark of Moser Baer low price DVDs.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The only special feature in the DVD is the 'The Making of the Film' which spans 20 minutes. Though not extraordinary, it makes for a watch better when compared to other films since it just doesn't restrict itself to the clichéd interviews of the cast members who are content talking about their characters. Instead, the focus is also on happened during the sets and some behind the screen happenings. Actual on-location shoot coupled with director Imtiaz Ali calling the shots makes for an interesting watch, though still not of the kind which makes this additional DVD as a must watch.

As Imtiaz Ali, Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Pritam fondly remember the film and its making; it's a statement from Kareena which sums the essence and spirit of Jab We Met. She says - "Imtiaz has a mind of his own which is not yet corrupt"!

TECHNICAL DETAILS

- 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen format
- Subtitles in English
- 5.1 Dolby Digital & Stereo

CONCLUSION

Jab We Met is a must buy; there are absolutely no second thoughts around it. Numerous films came and went after the release of Jab We Met and the only ones which managed to make any impression were Om Shanti Om, Welcome and Taare Zameen Par. Now doesn't this explain the great run of this Imtiaz Ali film which has managed a Superhit status for itself at the box office?
