THE FILM

Why has every filmmaker in the town started dreaming that Priyadarshan's formula is so simple to be copied and executed, especially so when the director from the South is himself seemingly tired of repeating his own formula ever now and then?

Why have filmmakers not woken up to the fact that movies, which have 'diamonds ki chori' as the central element, are no more as acceptable as they were perhaps in the 70's?

Why do some filmmakers still feel that getting together a horde of actors together trying to spin a tale by merely collating a few gags is good enough to create a 130 minutes long film? Well, just the presence of gags does work in a few cases (One Two Three being the most recent cases) but in majority of instances, it doesn't!

And last but not the least, why do some filmmakers keep themselves entangled in a time wrap and create stories around a 'bhai' conning people and even his own girlfriend because he needs to sponsor his sister's studies and choose a 'bade ghar ka rishta' for her?

Oops, now all of this is so formulaic and in addition, such a drag! Moreover, Mr. White Mr. Black tries to pack in so many characters in so little time (well, everyone can't really be Priyadarshan) that in the end, getting all of them together on one stage is indeed a painful and near to impossible job. And eventually when it does happen, it appears to be truly compromised and absolutely forced.

Arshad Warsi as the kind hearted Mr. 'crook' Black and Suneil Shetty as a simpleton Mr. 'can be taken for a ride' White must really have been conned to be a part of this film that tries to be one cool comic caper. Well, cool it is when it comes to bit of visuals here and there in the film's narrative but overall there is just no sense or sensibility in the plot, which could be of some respite to the audience.

Yes, a few gags do work, especially the ones featuring Sharat Saxena, but then is that really good enough? In fact, mid-way through shooting the film, director Deepak Shivdasani must have realized that there is actually nothing much for his main leads Shetty and Warsi to do due to which he starts introducing a dozen odd other characters at an alarming pace.

Kiran Kumar comes and goes, Sadashiv Amrapurkar rises from the ashes and makes a guest appearance, Upasana Singh twitches her lips the way only she can while others keep crossing their path at so many impossible junctions that one starts wondering where the film is actually heading!

So what happens to the film's heroines then who could possibly seek a career in being long-shot duplicates of Preity Zinta or Neha Dhupia? They sing a couple of songs, act in a couple of emotional scenes and eventually add absolutely nothing to the plot. Also, one feels pity for the trio of Sandhya Mridul, Tania Zaetta and Kamala Ning, which must have been promised a 'Charie's Angels' kind of an outing but instead finds it to be a part of nothing better than a C-Grade impersonation!
