Why Bollywood celebrities are hooked on to Tiwari sweets
By Screen Weekly, December 17, 2007 - 09:09 IST
It’s like any other sweet shop offering the choicest of mithais and sinful eats like samosas, kachoris, pattice, chhole puri etc. But Tiwari Sweets, an
unostentatious mithai shop in the busy JVPD area in Juhu has an enviable clientele. Don’t be surprised to see artistes from Bollywood dropping by,
or their chauffeurs coming out of Mercs and Honda Accords carrying away large amount of goodies. Today we spot Ruslaan Mumtaaz, actress Anjana
Mumtaz’s son who made his debut this year in the mushy MP3, chatting up a friend over a tall glass of lassi and a plate of boondi ladoos! The actor
who started off modelling while in college and has almost two dozen ad campaigns in his resume, smiles at my raised eyebrows and grins sheepishly.
“Try the lassi, you’ll love it. And these boondi ladoos……ooh, they are out of this world. I never eat them except from here! My trainer will holler at me
if he knows about them but they are simply irresistible,” he grins, also revealing that he started dropping by when he was studying in NM College,
and preferred lassi over coffee!
Says Tiwariji who started his mithai business 70 years back in Kolkata, before opening an outlet here in Mumbai 20 years back. “Our mithais have an
excellent taste because of the pure ghee and fresh ingredients used. And we don’t use any onions or garlic in our snack preparations.” No wonder it
is not only Ruslaan but many other celebrities who are hooked on to the goodies here. The list is endless…..while Sridevi drops in to buy mithai,
Sanjay Leela Bhansali comes in for masala milk and masala kachori, Govinda drops in with his nephew for masala milk, and singer Kumar Sanu for
masala parathas! Kiran Kumar and Shakti Kapoor go for raj kachori while for Anuradha Paudwal it is ras malai. Orders for kaju katli, special laddoos,
badam pista barfis and rasmalai pour in from Amitabh Bachchan’s, Shatrughan Sinha’s, Jeetendra’s, Raj Babbar’s and Raveena Tandon’s places…..
revealing that our film industry does have a sweet tooth!
“I’m not surprised,” pipes in Ruslaan who says that he cannot come as much as he would like to as he is busy with Tere Sang his second film due for
release in February. “It is also a college romance directed by Satish Kaushik, and I am paired opposite newcomer Sheena,” adding that he was
amongst the first bunch of actors who graduated from Anupam Kher’s acting school, is a trained dancer from Shiamak Davar, now has his eyes only
on films…… and is hoping for a busier 2008!
